Winter and Spring for 2013.

Happy Holidays and New Year to all!

I hope all is well with you and your family/friends.

As you know, we are always concerned about your lawn and landscape. It's our job! We take pride in what you take pride in, and want your property to look its best.

With that in mind, we want to share some thoughts with you about lawns and landscapes during the winter and very early spring.

2012 brought severe weather with harsh consequences, as all of you are aware. In turf, some small seedlings from this fall seedings, may not be able to have weathered the prolonged dry period during late fall and early winter. With that in mind, it will be a good idea to check the lawn in very early spring(march) to see what areas might need additional renovations.
Dormant seeding, and some ungerminated seed will germinate in very ealry spring, given good spring rains. Without these, additional water will be needed for success.

Landscape plants, especially newly planted, are in need of water also. Dont forget to water them when possible to keep the soil moist in and around the root ball.
The rule of thumb is that trees and plants that lose their leaves can't use water while they are dormant, but still need a moist root medium to not damage feeder roots.
Even more important is to water deeply all evergreen trees if the ground is not frozen. They will continue to loose water through their needles or leaves during the winter months. A peroidic deep watering for these types of plants is recommended.

Of course, water is absolutely vital to any success. With an overall drought, purposed to conintue into 2013, watering practices should be changed to accomodate the plants needs. These needs are quite different at this point, as much of our soils have been deeply parched.

Winter - Spring 2012 and your lawn

2011 was very dry as many of you are very aware.  This winter has been dry and unseasonably warm. 

This is a quick reminder of plant care that you can do over this winter and next spring to ensure a better lawn and landscape for 2012.

Young grass seedlings and trees or shrubs  planted last fall, have been weakened by the weather pattern this past fall and so far in our winter.   This means, if we have a dry spring, that many young plants may perish from drought, even though the temperatures may be very nice!

To ensure the most success with your lawn and landscape for 2012,  water these plants during extended dry periods we may have this winter and coming spring.

Fall 2011

We are in fall swing, which means preparing lawns for winter!

Now is the time to make sure your lawn is rid of the last of the falling leaves before winter.

Also, dont forget we offer curbside leaf removal for those of you that dont mind collecting, raking and blowing your leaves to an accessable area of your lawn. The chore of picking them up and removing them is what we do best!

Summer 2011 issues and concerns.

I know all of you are aware of the very hot and humid weather we have had this summer.  There is a few issues you should be aware of:

Irrigation this time of year is vital to keeping the lawn looking the best it can.  Watering this time of year should be longer runtimes instead of more days.  If you have questions on watering schedules please contact us so that we may assist you.

Diseases such as brown patch, summer patch and dollar spot are very active when these weather patterns exist especially on irrigated turf and/or lanws in secluded areas.  Please notify us imediately if you notice unusual brown spots.  We will be happy to diagnose and treat any issues you may have.

Also, bagworms are very active currently along with many other pests that can damage your landscape plants.  Periodic walk throughs of your landscape areas are recommended this time of year.  Please call if you have any concerns or quesitons. We would be glad to help with keeping your landscape and garden plants and trees healthy.

Spring is in full force!

I am sure everyone is welcoming warmer weather after such a brutal winter!

It has arrived now in full force and DON'T FORGET we offer much more than just lawn mowing and applications!! Call us for any landscape and irrigation needs.

Weeds are out in full force now with the advent of more spring like temperatures and weather patterns. The turf is still recovering from last years harsh summer. This has left a few spots thin to allow a few more weeds than normal to enter the lawns. We are starting now to spray weeds with our second application and soon those spots will fill in with more lush turf and the weeds will be dead and gone!!

Spring is here!

October 2010

Well, fall has finally come and it actually has been quite dry until today. Many of you have had some renovations done to your lawn and still need to water daily until the end of the month if rain is scarce.

Leaves are beginning to fall now and our leaf season will begin very soon.

Dont forget we offer curbside leaf romoval for those of you that dont mind getting those leaves out to the street for us! This service is done by appointment and not by chance! Just call us with a minimum of two days advance notice, and we will come by and pick up your leaves on the date YOU can have them ready!

Now is also the time for scheduling the winterization of your irrigation systems. We are starting this service at the end of October. This means you have the full use of your sprinklers to keep your lawn renovations watered for the rest of the season. We will be calling and making appointments soon, but if you are not on our current list give us a call to get scheduled.

August! ouch!

August is here and it has welcomed us with very hot and humid conditions.

Call or emial us now for renovation of your lawn to ensure it recovers after such a brutal summer and looks great going into next spring! Contact us to schedule aeration and seeding before August 15 and recieve a 15% discount on your service, refer a neighbor and recieve an extra 5% off your service. Contact us now as reviving your lawn to keep it thick is the best defense against weeds.

THINGS TO KEEP AN EYE ON IN YOUR LAWN!

There have been severe outbreaks of damaging disease in turf and other plants this year, and they continue to be a threat. If you think there may be an issue with your lawn or landscape plants give us a call so we can diagnose any issues and a recovery plan to meet your needs and of course your plants needs!

We are also tracking and monitoring what may be a severe outbreak of damaging insects to your lawn. THe insect is the sod webworm larvae. The damage will start occuring with dry spots that resemble drought stress, but the grass turns grey instead of brown and is no longer in tact unlike just dry grass. We can make preventative applications to ensure you dont get any damage and also spray existing infestations.

Damage from these insects will happen anytime between right now and early to mid September.

JULY AND AUGUST

Summer is upon us now. Humidity has taken its toll on plants and many lawns have suffered from fungal diseases.

The summer months also bring on insects. Many of these can cause damage to a nice lawn in a hurry. We already treat your lawn for grubs, but there are many other lawn pests that cause problems.

If you notice brown patches of any kind, and are unsure if it is drought stress or disease/insect, call us to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

We are also beginning our shrub and tree trimming now as we end early summer. If you are not on our scheduled list of shrub timming, call us and we would be gald to view your property and give you and estimate and evaluation with a plan to get your landscape in the condition you desire.

May and June

Late spring is now upon us.

We are finishing the weed control applications right now and will begin grub control applications around the end of May. Also shrub trimming will be done during these months to cut off spring flush of new growth.

During these months with humididy and frequent rains fungus and insect issues may arise! Be on the lookout for any thing that may indicate problems and contact us to diagnose any potential disease or insect damages to both turf and shrubs/trees.

Things to look for reguarding fungus are small to medium sized patches of
discolored turf and spots on the leaf blades of yellow or brown.

THis is also the time for insects to ruin some of your trees and shrubs. One of the most common pests we will see are bagworms. If you have had issues in the past then we recommend treaments for the future as the problem will continue and only get worse.

April is here!!! Flowers are blooming and so are the weeds!

Now is the time to get your lawn sprayed for weeds. We are currently applying our round 2 applications of broadleaf weed control with a mild fertilizer to keep your lawn LUSH, GREEN and WEED FREE!!!!

Also, the grass is growing in full force now so if you you would like to have a true professinal mow your lawn every week please contact us now. By having us on your lawn every week, we can monitor your lawn for any problems than may arise and be quick with a diagnosis and treatment meathod to ensure your lawn stays healthy.

Spring is upon us now with warmer weather and rains!! Now is the time to clean up lawns and landscapes to prepare them for new green growth and beautiful flowers!

March is the best time to put down a pre -emergent for your lawn to protect against crabgrass and certain weeds along with a spring fertilizer to promote vigorous new growth. It is also the time to clean up leaves, sticks and the top dead layer of grass to promote a great start to a beautiful lawn.

Clearing debri and dead plant materials in your landscape is key to support new growth. After this has been done, a fresh layer of mulch is important for the health of the plants as well as the asthetic renewal of your investment surrounding your home.

winter is approaching, what needs to be done??

Well, let me answer that for you.

1.Cut your lawn shorter and remove debri if applicable
2. fertilize for the winter

Your lawn should be mowed shorter this time of year so it does not choke itself over snow covered days. As grass continues to grow over the winter , cutting it shorter in late Fall helps so that it is not too tall come spring.,

Another reason to cut shorter is leftover debri during the winter, such as leaves, can more easlily blow across the lawn instead of getting trapped in tall grass and then matting down with rain and snow causing dead spots.

A good high nitrogen fertilizer should be applied in late fall to feed the plant over the Winter months so it will start growth earlier and faster in the spring.

As fall is in gear, so will be the time to clean up the lawn and lansdcape from debris and leaves. We would be glad to help with these tasks!

Now is the time to aerate your lawn and repair summer damage.

Now is the best time over the next 6-7 weeks to renovate your lawn. Doing this every year whether dry or wet is good for the over all health of your grass. By adding overseeding with this you are constantly adding improved varieties of grass , in otherwords maintaing a stand of turf like a car.

Any areas that were damaged more will have to be verticut with seed to repair as if it never happened!!
